KRUGERSDORP GAME RESERVE

The reserve is a stone's throw from Krugersdorp, the town from which it takes its name. As it only takes 40 minutes to drive here from Johannesburg, it is a popular weekend getaway and one of Gauteng's most visited reserves. Among the numerous game species introduced here are impala, black wildebeest, giraffe, eland, roan, sable, red hartebeest, nyala, blesbok, springbok and waterbuck. Buffalo and white rhino are kept in special enclosures. One of the reserves great attractions is the 100ha lion camp. Smaller predators such as blackbacked jackal and brown hyena also roam the reserve and keen twitchers can bring along their binoculars and bird identification guides, as more than 140 bird species occur here.

Alhough walking within the reserve is not allowed, guided game drives in open vehicles can be arranged. Visitors are also allowed to travel the reserve's network of game-viewing roads in their own vehicles. Guided trails are sometimes arranged by the Wildlife Society. A special area for day visitors close to the entrance provides picnic and braai facilities. There is also a restaurant and take-away outlet. The reserve is open throughout the year. Opening time: 08h00 to 17h00.

Accommodation comes in the form of twelve two-bed rondavels and six six-bed chalets. Camping and caravan sites with eighteen stands and ablution facilities are also available.

How to get there:
From Krugersdorp take R24 towards Magaliesburg. The reserve is out of town, on the right. An entrance fee is charged.
